Comparison
Russian manicure vs regular, acrylic and dip powder
Four systems that sit next to each other on most salon menus at similar prices, and behave completely differently on your nails. Written by the studio that only uses one of them.
| Russian manicure | Regular manicure | Acrylic | Dip powder | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Preparation | Dry, e-file | Hands soaked in water | Usually soaked | Usually soaked |
| Cuticle area | Dead tissue removed, living skin untouched | Trimmed while swollen | Trimmed | Trimmed |
| Why it lifts | Rarely — product sits on clean nail only | Skin settles, product overlaps skin | Rigid overlay, stress at the edge | Same as regular prep |
| Material | Hard gel | Polish or soft gel | Powder polymer + liquid monomer | Adhesive + fine acrylic powder |
| On a thin natural nail | Flexes, absorbs impact | Neutral | Rigid — transfers knocks to the nail bed | Rigid |
| Removal | Filed down, no long soak | Wiped or short soak | Long acetone soak | Long acetone soak |
| Hygiene question to ask | How are the e-file bits processed? | Are files single-use? | Is the monomer dish cleaned per client? | Do you dip into the jar, or pour? |
| Appointment length | 1 hr 30 – 1 hr 45 | 30–45 min | 1 hr – 1 hr 40 | 1 hr |
| We offer it | Yes | No | No | No |
The one question worth asking any salon
If a salon offers dip powder, ask: do you dip into the jar, or pour a portion out? In the classic method the client’s glued nail goes into a jar shared with other clients. Studios that take hygiene seriously pour out a portion and discard what is left — it costs more and takes longer, which is exactly why it is not universal. The answer tells you what their standard is for everything you cannot see.
Why we only do one of the four
We use hard gel and nothing else. Not because the others cannot be done well, but because being excellent at one system beats being adequate at three. Hard gel on a properly prepared dry plate holds for weeks, leaves the natural nail intact underneath, and grows out without a shelf.
